Bry Atchison, once a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers' dance team and currently an assistant prosecutor with the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, was taken into custody on March 8 after an officer responded to a report of a woman lying outside a vehicle in Edgewater. Bodycam footage from the incident was recently released by the YouTube channel @TransparencyBodycam.
According to the footage, Officer Evan Bringas arrived around 8:19 p.m. after a bystander saw Atchison fall out of her car. The vehicle was parked on a curb, the engine still running and the driver's door wide open.
Atchison was initially unresponsive but eventually mumbled, "What?" when Bringas tried to wake her. When asked if she knew her location, she replied that she did not.
She told officers she had been celebrating her 30th birthday and had come from a bar earlier in the night. "I just need to get home," she said. "I'm sorry, I didn't realize I was this drunk."
Atchison struggled to stand and could not complete a field sobriety test. She admitted she had been drinking and asked several times to call her son's father. Bringas noted the smell of alcohol before placing her under arrest for driving while intoxicated.
She was also cited for refusing a breathalyzer. During transport, she vomited inside the police cruiser, according to the report.
Once at the station, officers noticed that she wasn't identified as a former NBA dance team member, but an ID badge showed she was a member of the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. She was later released to her brother.
Her case remains pending.
"Ms. Atchison self-reported an incident that occurred in March, and we are monitoring the matter closely," Essex County Prosecutor's Office spokesperson Carmen Martin told the Daily Mail. "Appropriate adjustments have been made to her case assignments as warranted."
The office declined further comment, citing internal personnel policy.
According to a 2015 article by Case Western Reserve University, Atchison had joined the Cavaliers dance team while in school. She also participated in the 2016 Miss Ohio pageant.
A court date has not yet been scheduled for the former NBA cheerleader.
