According to court documents obtained by TMZ Sports, Morris is accused of writing bad checks to two Las Vegas casinos totaling $265,000. Prosecutors allege Morris issued a check for $115,000 to the MGM Grand in May 2024, then failed to repay the debt when the check bounced.
One month later, the documents say Morris wrote another bad check, this time for $150,000 to the Wynn Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. Authorities allege Morris knowingly wrote both checks without sufficient funds and had no intention of paying the money back.
Morris was taken into custody at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. His attorneys have pushed for his release, though those efforts have so far been denied. His agent has called the allegations "absolute insanity" and maintains there was no intent to commit fraud.
A former first-round draft pick of the Houston Rockets in 2011, Morris has spent 13 years in the NBA, averaging 12 points and 4.4 rebounds per game while suiting up for several teams. He enjoyed his best season in 2019-20 with the New York Knicks, where he averaged 19.6 points in 43 games.
Morris has earned more than $100 million in salary over the course of his NBA career.
His twin brother, Markieff Morris, recently went on social media to criticize the arrest.
"The wording is crazy," Markieff wrote on X of the arrest report. "Damn for that amount of money they'll embarrass you in the airport with your family. They got y'all really thinking bro did some fraud. They could have came to the crib for all that. When y'all hear the real story... all I can say is lesson learned. Bro will tell y'all tomorrow."
